Firestone Tire & Rubber Was Founded!

According to historians, the wheel was invented around 3500 BC. In its earliest form, the wheel was a curved piece of wood. Leather was eventually added to make the ride softer. Over time, the leather was replaced by rubber. However, the original rubber tire was a solid rubber wheel that contained no air, as pictured above. Weird to think about, right?

Synthetic rubber was created in 1909, by a team in the Bayer laboratory in Elberfeld, Germany. Just a few years before, a deal was struck between Firestone and Henry Ford that led to Firestone being the sole provider of tires and equipment for the first-ever Indy 500 race in Indianapolis, Indiana. The tire industry then had a long and eventful ride on the way to being industrialized in and out of the U.S.
